About Us Home / About Us

The Herald is a once-a-week community newspaper serving Johnston County. It is published on Wednesday and is delivered with The News & Observer to subscribers and as a free, stand-alone newspaper to nonsubscribers. Its total distribution is more than 34,000.

The Herald has been reporting about life in Johnston County since 1882.

After decades at its South Fourth Street facility, the Herald’s news and advertising employees recently moved to new offices at 228 and 226 East Market Street downtown. The Smithfield offices are also home to the Garner-Clayton Record, a weekly community newspaper launched in January 2009.

Delivery
More than 34,000 copies of The Herald are delivered to select single-family homes in Johnston County. Distributions begins on Wednesday mornings and is completed by 6 p.m. The paper is available at rack locations across the area for 50 cents, or inside copies of The News & Observer on Wednesdays from N&O news racks.
