Three sought in robbery
Police in Selma are investigating the armed robbery of a Kenly man Sunday near a convenience store on JR Road.According to a report, the man said he walked from the Regency Inn to Sandhu’s Discount Gas to buy a drink. After making his purchase, three men approached him outside the store and offered to give him a ride back to his hotel.The man accepted the offer. But once he was in the car, the men drove past his hotel and began heading west on U.S. 70 toward Clayton, the man told police. One of the men then pointed a gun at the victim and demanded money.The victim told officers he gave the men $350 in cash. The men then stopped along U.S. 70 and ordered him out of the car. The man was not harmed in the incident.
Five taken to hospital after wreck
Five people were taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital Monday morning following a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95.According to an N.C. Highway Patrol report, Christopher Manuel Saldana, 27, of Jacksonville, was traveling south on I-95 near Exit 97 when his Ford SUV ran off the road to the left. He overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn before running off the road to the right, striking a ditch.He had four passengers, Rashod Betehaea, Terrance Harry, Danny Pinnock and Craig Boyce, all of New York. Harry, Pinnock and Boyce were ejected from the vehicle. All but Betehaea suffered visible injuries, and Betehaea was transported to the hospital for possible injuries.According to the report, officers were unable to determine if the driver was wearing a seatbelt, but none of the others were wearing seatbelts.Saldana was charged with reckless driving. His traveling speed was estimated at 75 mph in the 65 mph zone.
Angier man dies in crash
An Angier man died following a wreck near his home Thursday night.Christopher Lee Gibson, 50, of 5840 Zack’s Mill Road, was traveling east on Graham Pond Road in his Chevy SUV at 8:26 p.m. when his vehicle ran off the road to the right, struck a mailbox, and overturned several times. The vehicle then ran off the road to the left and struck another mailbox before coming to rest in a ditch. Gibson was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle.According to an N.C. Highway Patrol report, Gibson’s speed was 65 mph in the 55 mph zone.
Woman’s vehicle stolen in Clayton
A Clayton woman’s vehicle and purse were stolen Monday, police reported.Rosales Maldonado said her 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was taken from a parking lot on North Church Street. The vehicle contained a purse with $250 cash.
Business broken into, cash stolen
Cash was stolen from a Clayton business Monday, police reported.Someone used a blunt object to break the glass front door at J&D Sprinkler, according to a report. About $300 was taken from the West Main Street business. No other items were reported missing.
Police nab wanted man
Clayton police on Saturday arrested a Garner man for driving while impaired and discovered that he was also wanted by authorities in Georgia.Michael Naples, 55, was charged with one count each of driving while impaired and driving with an open container. Police discovered Naples had outstanding warrants for his arrest from Georgia law enforcement officials.According to an arrest report, Clayton police received a telephone call from Wal-Mart that an intoxicated person was being disruptive. Police found Naples near the vicinity on Town Centre Boulevard. Naples was extremely impaired, according to the report.
Smithfield man stabbed at home
A Smithfield man was stabbed at his home Friday night.George Medina, 36, of 609 Caswell St., told Smithfield police at 11 p.m. that an acquaintance had just attacked him with a knife. He suffered internal injuries. Smithfield police are investigating.
Police investigate armed robbery
Smithfield police are investigating an armed robbery Monday night at 3 G Mart at 320 Stancil St.At 9:32 p.m., the storeowner reported to police that the robber had a handgun and stole $550.
Vandal hits at SSS
Someone vandalized Smithfield-Selma High School shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday. The incident left $1,000 damage to the exterior brick of the school building.Smithfield police are investigating.
Woman’s house shot at
Smithfield police are investigating a report that someone shot a gun into a woman’s home in a gang-related incident Friday night.The Kay Drive resident said at 10:41 p.m. that no one was hurt, but her bedroom wall, a mattress and a box spring and the door of her car were all damaged.
Business reports embezzlement
Smithfield police are investigating an embezzlement report filed by Classic Care Homes Inc. at 101 Annie Parker Dr. According to a report filed at 3:55 p.m. Thursday, the embezzlement involved five business checks made payable to the victim worth $596 and $582 each.
Five taken to hospital after two-car wreck
The driver and four passengers of a vehicle involved in a wreck Monday night in Smithfield were all taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital with possible injuries.Ashley Briana Sowell, of 204 S. Church St., Pine Level, was traveling west in a Ford SUV on Peedin Road at 10 p.m. when she rear-ended an Oldsmobile van stopped at the red light.The van’s driver, Renada Aletha Jackson, of 3382 N.C. 210, Lot 5 and her passengers, Mirian Archibald, Endiah Jackson, Josiah Peters and Jalyn Jackson were all treated by Smithfield EMS before being transported to the hospital.Sowell was charged with failure to reduce speed.
