Inmate facing additional charges
A Johnston County inmate is charged with assaulting a deputy, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office reported.Latarance Monta Burwell, 31, of 1210 Fayetteville St., Smithfield, was arrested and charged with one count each of breaking and entering, assaulting an officer inflicting serious injury and larceny after breaking and entering Tuesday. He was placed under $55,000 bond.Johnston County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Tammy Amaon said Burwell was already in jail on charges of breaking and entering Monday. The following day, Sgt. Dennis Hatfield took Burwell to the booking office, she said.
When Burwell refused to change into the required inmate uniform, Hatfield tried to use a Taser on him, Amaon said. After Hatfield’s attempt was unsuccessful, Burwell hit him in the face with a closed fist, she said. Hatfield went to the hospital to get stitches over the cut above his eyebrow, she said.
Man robbed at gas station
Police in Selma are searching for a suspect in the robbery of a Robeson County man on Monday at a local gas station.According to police reports, the St. Pauls man told officers he was leaving the Shell station on U.S. 70 about 11:30 p.m. when someone tackled him from behind and knocked him to the ground. The attacker snatched a gold chain from around the man's neck.Officer Karen Lee said the victim told her that the man ran towards the Regency Inn, where the victim also was staying, and entered a room on the second floor. Police searched for the attacker, but could not locate him.
