Rape suspect held under $1 million bond
A Smithfield man is being held under a $1 million bond after he was charged with first-degree child rape Thursday evening, according to a report.

Eduviges Reyes Vargas, 33, of 820 Second Ave., was served the warrant, which was filed July 8, 2002, on the felony charge at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Johnston County Detention Center.

Man accused of exposing himself
A Smithfield man was arrested Thursday morning after a woman told police he exposed himself to her, according to a report.

Arnold Joabe Newsome Jr., 67, of 519 N. Seventh St., was arrested at 9 a.m. at 721-2 N. Bright Leaf Blvd. after a Princeton woman reported an indecent exposure at the place of his arrest.

Newsome was taken to Johnston County Jail and placed under a $500 bond.

Woman reports car theft
Smithfield police are investigating a woman’s report that her car was stolen from in front of her residence.

The Bingham Street resident told police the 1994 Chevy Cavalier was taken from her property, according to a report.
