An employee at a Smithfield car dealership was taken to WakeMed Tuesday after the accelerator got stuck in a commercial vehicle he was driving through the parking lot.

The Smithfield man was moving the vehicle in the parking lot at Smithfield Pre-Owned on North Bright Leaf Boulevard, traveling at 35 mph, when the vehicle ran off the road, struck a concrete curb and then collided with a tree. The incident happened at 9:10 a.m.

The man was first taken to Johnston Memorial with head injuries and injuries to his left shoulder and arm, according to a report. He was later flown to WakeMed.

According to the Smithfield police report, the man’s flip-flop was found stuck between the gas and brake pedals.

Police arrest third burglary suspect
Smithfield police have arrested a third person in conjunction with a Monday morning burglary at a Rand Street home.

Taurean Raheem May, 16, of 1000 Furlonge Drive, Smithfield, was arrested at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of South Sixth and East Church streets. He was charged with one count each of felony larceny and felony breaking and entering, according to a report. He was taken to the Johnston County Jail and placed under a $40,000 bond.

Woman charged with ID theft
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Selma-area woman with stealing the identity of a local doctor to rack up thousands of dollars in purchases on a company credit card.

Spokeswoman Tammy Amaon said Dr. Subrata Guha reported the crime April 7. She said Guha had received a phone call from creditors at American Express about an outstanding balance of $4,239 on his account through Horizon Family Medicine.

Guha told authorities that 33-year-old Kristy Barnes, who kept the books at the medical practice, would have had access to the credit card at the time he reported the crime. Deputies charged Barnes, of 967 Fulghum Little Creek Road near Selma, on Tuesday.

Barnes was jailed under a $10,000 bond.

Third suspect charged in robbery
Authorities on Tuesday arrested and charged the second of three suspects wanted in connection with the April 27 assault and robbery of a Four Oaks-area man.

Darrius Emmanuel Jackson, 18, of 1647 Lee-Johnson Road, Dunn, stands charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and one count each of first- and second-degree kidnapping. He remains in the Johnston County jail under a $250,000 bond.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Tammy Amaon said the victim reported that three people approached him and a friend in a car on Raleigh Road. The driver, 21-year-old Michael Anton Johnson, pulled out a gun and demanded money, she said. Johnson then hit the victim on the nose with the gun, took $20 from his pocket and sped off toward Benson, Amaon said.

Johnson was charged April 28 with two counts each of robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree kidnapping. He has since been released from jail after posting a $200,000 bond.

Warrants have also been issued for the arrest of a third suspect, Martez Dewayne Chapman, 22, of Benson. Amaon said Chapman would face similar charges upon his arrest.
