Cakewalk in ClaytonWant to glamorize your tote bag or clothing but don’t know where to start?
Cinda Mock, owner of Cakewalk, has the answer. At her shop in downtown Clayton, Mock paints, sews, monograms and embellishes gifts with everything from ribbons to gemstones. “I tell people if you dream it, we can make it,” she said.
The idea for Cakewalk came from Mock’s daughters, who often asked their mother to improve clothing that lacked any glitz. “My daughters asked me to paint the jeans or put ribbons on them,” she said. “I try to cater to the ‘tween-age’ group because they don’t have a lot of stuff. That is a hard age group to buy for.”
Mock, who ran a similar business in Greenville, invites children to celebrate their birthdays at Cakewalk. The birthday child and guests get to make their own craft. Cakewalk provides the birthday cake, beverages and a private party room for two hours.
“They think it is so cool,” Mock said. “I haven’t had anybody who hasn’t had a blast.”
Besides personalizing items, customers can browse the gift shop or design their own jewelry. “We have been off to a good start,” Mock said. “Ever since I opened, we have been busy. It is so much fun.”
Cakewalk is at 308 W. Main St. Hours are 11 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. Saturdays. Mock plans to have extended hours in a few weeks. The telephone number is 359-2229. The Web site, www.shopcakewalk.com, is under construction.
