Pick of the Crop reopens

Susan Taylor has reopened Susan’s Pick of the Crop in Smithfield.

Taylor opened the store last spring but later closed because farmers were unable to provide enough produce because of the drought. This spring, Taylor is back with more produce, cakes and specialty gifts.

The store still offers fresh fruits and vegetables from Johnston County farmers and homemade jams, molasses, potato and chicken salads and pimiento cheese.

New to the store are Vera Bradley lamps, beauty products, tote bags that can be monogrammed, candles, wreaths, dolls and gift baskets.

Susan’s Pick of the Crop is at 538 W. Market St. It is open from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. Sundays. The telephone number is 934-0851.

For cable customers

The first Time Warner Cable Customer Care Center in Eastern North Carolina has opened in Clayton.

“This is the first of its kind in the Triangle,” said Melissa Buscher, public affairs manager for Time Warner. “In the past, our customers used the center to pay bills and swap equipment. Now, the Customer Care Center offers a more exciting, interactive experience.”

Visitors can try Road Runner Internet services, surf through the channels or look at programs in high definition.

Time Warner Customer Care is at 11771 U.S. 70 West in the Lowes Foods shopping center. Hours are 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 1-800-TWCABLE (892-2253).

A ribbon cutting will be at noon April 28. Refreshments will be served.

Salon Envy in Clayton

Sue Stancil has opened Salon Envy in downtown Clayton.

Stancil, of Four Oaks, has been in the hair-care industry for 15 years. She and stylist Denise Presnall offer haircuts for men, women and children. Also, coloring, updos and perms are available.

Salon Envy is at 395 W. Main St. in the former Brass Plum Hair Salon space. It is open from 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Saturdays. The telephone number is 553-3362. The Web site, www.salonenvync.com is under construction.

More Pucky’s Java

Deborah Pylant has opened her second Pucky’s Java Café in Clayton.

Pylant’s daughter, Patience Lawrence, encouraged her mother to open the new location in Riverwood Athletic Club. “She is the reason I decided to tackle this because she has moved back here from Topsail Island, where we are from,” Pylant said. “If she had not committed to that, I wouldn’t have taken the second location.”

Customers will find sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee and daily specials similar to the menu at the Pucky’s in Flowers Plantation. Pylant plans to sell Boars Head meats and cheeses, gourmet pizza, panini sandwiches and appetizers. Already, the restaurant is offering more desserts, including homemade pineapple upside down cake, cheesecake and bread pudding. Healthy snacks, such as granola bars, smoothies and fresh fruit baskets, are available.

“We initially didn’t consider it, but after talking with [Riverwood developer] Fred Smith and his son, I felt like we were a good fit,” Pylant said. “I am all about the community, and it is a family-owned business. We are really excited about this place.”

Pucky’s Java Café at Riverwood is at 375 Athletic Club Blvd. Hours are 7 a.m. till 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. till 9 p.m. Saturdays. Saturday hours will expand to midnight for live performances.

The telephone number is 550-7058.
