AWAKE in Clayton
AWAKE, a free sleep-apnea support group, will hold its first meeting from 5:30 till 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. Dr. Kim Goring will speak on sleep apnea and its links to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Specialists will be on hand to showcase the latest treatment equipment and check pressures of CPAP machines. A meal will be provided. Benefit in Clayton
A benefit for the Red Cross and Johnston County Animal Protection League will take place Thursday, April 23, at Zaxby’s on U.S. 70 Business in Clayton. For 5 till 8 p.m., the restaurant will donate 20 percent of sales to the Red Cross and Animal Protection League. From 6:30 till 7:30 p.m., a magician will be on hand, and jump house will be on the restaurant grounds, weather permitting.
Bingo in Selma

Reagan Day Dinner
The Johnston County Republican Party will hold its annual Reagan Day Dinner and Silent Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Agricultural Center, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield.
U.S. Sen. Richard Burr will speak, and the party will honor the late Freddie Adams with the first Ronald Wilson Reagan Legacy Award. After dinner and the program, The Seaside Band will perform.

Teen-driver safety
Teen Driver Safety Awareness Day is scheduled from 4 till 8 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Wal-Mart on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. The Highway Patrol will bring its rollover simulator, and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Department will have its simulation equipment on hand.

Bookmobile stops
Starting today (April 8), the Bookmobile of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will make monthly visits to the Cleveland community. The Bookmobile will stop at Swift Creek Plaza at 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Residents can get a library card, check out and return books and pick up online orders.
