‘Hero Packs’

A Johnston County 4-H’er is filling backpacks for children of U.S. soldiers who are overseas.

For her “Hero Packs,” the 4-H’er is seeking donations of stationery, journals, envelopes, stamps, pencil pouches, pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers, crayons, coloring books, stickers, rulers, stuffed animals, playing cards, yo-yos, key chains, miniature Etch A Sketches, three-inch by three-inch photo albums, disposable cameras, photo frames, photo books, scrapbook supplies and small scrapbooks.

Johnstonians may mail or carry their donations to the Johnston County Agricultural Center, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield, N.C. Mailed donations should be to the attention of “Hero Packs,” in care of Johnston County 4-H, Cooperative Extension Service.

Benefit Bunco

Benefit Bunco play is scheduled from 7 till 10 p.m. Friday, April 24, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. In addition to Bunco play with prizes, the evening will feature live jazz by Blue Concept, a raffle, food and a cash bar. Tickets are $20. Proceeds will go to the Nickelby Project, the Caroline Ball Foundation and Love Thy Neighbor. To purchase tickets, visit mothersunlimited.com.

Fieldcrest reunion

Former employees of Fieldcrest Cannon will hold a reunion at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Holt Lake Bar-B-Que & Seafood on U.S. 301 south of Smithfield. To attend, call 689-2081, 965-4312 or 963-3457.

Health screenings

Health screenings will be available Wednesday, May 13, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center on Booker Dairy Road in Smithfield.

Life Line Screening will screen for blocked arteries, abdominal aortic aneurysms, hardening of the arteries in the legs, atrial fibrillation and bone density.

Benefit in Clayton

A benefit for the Red Cross and Johnston County Animal Protection League will take place Thursday, April 23, at Zaxby’s on U.S. 70 Business in Clayton. For 5 till 8 p.m., the restaurant will donate 20 percent of sales to the Red Cross and Animal Protection League. From 6:30 till 7:30 p.m., a magician will be on hand, and a jump house will be on the restaurant grounds, weather permitting.

Bingo in Selma

Bingo play for older adults is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, at McDonald’s in Selma. Play is free, with prizes going to winners. For more information, call the Selma Parks and Recreation Department at 975-1411.

A trip for seniors

The Selma Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a trip to the Billy Graham Library on Wednesday, May 13. The cost is $20. The deadline to register is Wednesday, April 22. For more information, call 975-1411 or stop by the Parks and Recreation office.
