Fair seeks exhibitors
A health fair in Selma is seeking exhibitors. The Community Health Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Harrison Alumni Building in Selma. For more information, call Laveshia Johnson at 376-0019.
AWAKE in Clayton
AWAKE, a free sleep-apnea support group, will hold its first meeting from 5:30 till 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. Dr. Kim Goring will speak on sleep apnea and its links to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Specialists will be on hand to showcase the latest treatment equipment and check pressures of CPAP machines. A meal will be provided. Donations sought
The Johnston County Animal Protection League is seeking donations for its yard sale in June. To arrange for pickup, call 422-6002 after April 30.
Contestants sought
The Johnston County Area Pageant is seeking contestants from birth to age 18. The pageant, scheduled for May 17 in Buies Creek, is a preliminary to the Little Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant. For an application, call Deborah Honeycutt-Johnson at 552-1531 or 796-2107 no later than May 10.
Picnic in Clayton
The “Yes We Can” Coalition of Johnston County will hold a “Meet and Greet” picnic from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Clemmons Educational State Forest, 2411 Old U.S. 70, Clayton. Hot dogs will be for sale, and grills are available for those who wish to bring their own food. Also, the coalition will hold a raffle. Seminar series
The Johnston County Mental Health Center will offer “Live Your Life Well,” a seminar series, in May. Here is the schedule:
May 6 — “Caring for Your Aging Parent and Yourself.”
May 13 — “Alcohol and Substance Abuse — How They Affect Our Community.”
May 20 — “Tips for Parenting Teens.”
May 27 — “Managing Stress During Challenging Times.”
All sessions will run from noon till 1 p.m. in Wesley Hall at Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield. Those attending may bring a bag lunch. The Mental Health Center will provide drinks and dessert.

Volunteer training
The Guardian ad Litem program is seeking mature, caring adult volunteers to speak up for children who are involved in the courts because of abuse or neglect. Orientation for prospective volunteers is scheduled from 5:30 till 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, in the second-floor conference room at 219 Johnston St. in Smithfield. Ribs for Relay
The Johnston Community College Relay for Life team will hold a Ribs for Relay Cookoff on Thursday, April 30, on the Smithfield campus. The entry fee is $25, and the deadline to enter is April 28. On April 30, plates will be on sale from 11 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. The cost is $7 per plate and includes ribs, boiled potatoes, string beans and roll. The Relay for Life team will deliver orders of 10 or more plates. The fundraiser will benefit the Johnston County Relay for Life, which will be held May 29-30 on the JCC campus. Ham & Yam Supper
The Smithfield Kiwanis Club will serve its annual Ham & Yam Supper from 5 till 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the cafeteria at Smithfield-Selma High School. The cost is $7 per plate and includes ham, sweet potatoes, cabbage, cornbread sticks and beverage.
