Parenting seminar

A seminar on “Tips for Parenting Teens” is scheduled from noon till 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Wesley Hall at Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield. The seminar is free. Those attending may bring a bag lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided. For more information, call Pam Radford at 989-5500. The seminar is a project of the Johnston County Mental Health Center.

Luncheon for women

Amanda Lamb, author of “Deadly Dose: The Untold Story of a Homicide Investigator’s Crusade of Truth and Justice,” will speak at noon Thursday, May 14, at the Lampe Building on Market Street in downtown Smithfield. The luncheon program is open to professional women working in downtown Smithfield. “Deadly Dose” gives readers a peek into the inner-workings of the Eric Miller murder investigation, which spanned four years and gripped Raleigh. Lamb’s first book, “Smotherhood: Wickedly Funny Confessions from the Early Years,” is a collection of anecdotes about parenting. To attend the luncheon, send an e-mail to jwillse@cantella.com.

Work after 50

The JobLink Career Center in Smithfield will offer a workshop titled “Steps to Finding the Work You Want After 50.” The workshop is scheduled from 9 till 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Capital Area JobLink on the campus of Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Parenting workshop

A parenting workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Room J1630 of the Public Safety Services Building at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Admission is free. Dr. Joyce Willard Teal of Dallas, Texas, will speak. She is the author of numerous parenting books, including “Are You Raising One of the Next Generation of Hoodlums?”

A day for seniors

Senior Citizen Day is scheduled from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. Friday, May 22, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. The event will feature entertainment, food and door prizes. For more information, call 553-1555.

Senior Citizen’s Day

The 15th annual Selma Senior Citizen’s Day will take place Friday, May 15, at the Selma Fire Station. The day, for adults 55 and older, will begin with coffee at 9:30 a.m. Entertainment will follow at 10 a.m. The Throne of Grace and the Selma Elementary School Chorus will perform. Lunch will be at noon. All events are free.

Bingo in Selma

Bingo play for older adults is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at McDonald’s on U.S. 70. Play is free, with prizes awarded. For more information, call 975-1411.

Cleveland Library

The Cleveland Library is now open from 6 till 9 p.m. Thursdays. Other hours are 6 till 9 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Saturdays. The library is at 5533 N.C. 42 in the Cleveland community.

Young at Heart

Young at Heart, a group for seniors, will have lunch at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at First Baptist Church in Four Oaks. Musician Tommy Buzzard of Vance will perform. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.

MOMS to meet

The MOMS Club of Clayton will meet at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at Everett Chapel Baptist Church on Everett Avenue behind Burger King in Clayton. The club will provide snacks and drinks. Babysitting safely

Want your child to learn how to handle emergencies while babysitting? Johnston Health will offer a safe sitter course from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m. June 18 and 19 in Room 1404A of the Medical Mall in Smithfield. Targeted at children ages 11 through 13, the two-day class offers medically accurate instruction on basic childcare, lifesaving techniques and accident prevention. It also includes a session on how and when to call for help. To enroll, call the education department of Johnston Medical Center at 938-7736. The fee is $60.
