Free health screenings

Free health screenings will be available from 1:30 till 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Johnston County Public Health Department, 517 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. The available screenings are listed below. For children — vision and hearing screenings for ages 4 and older. For men — prostate-cancer screening for men ages 50-70. For women — clinical breast exam and education. Additional screenings — blood pressure, body-mass index, cholesterol, dental screenings, diabetes and HIV. Also the day will offer removable tattoos, face painting, games, story time, refreshments, nutrition information, information on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and a question-and-answer session with doctors.

Yard sale in Clayton

A yard sale is scheduled from 7 a.m. till noon Saturday, June 6, in the Four Oaks Bank parking lot in downtown Clayton. Proceeds will go to the “Yes We Can Johnston County Coalition,” which will also raffle a grill, a high-definition TV and a video-game console. Tickets will be $2.

Memorial Day service

A Memorial Day service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, May 24, in Barbour’s Grove Park in Four Oaks. A reception will follow. The service is a project of the Four Oaks American Legion post and its auxiliary, which plans a surprise for all veterans in attendance.

Managing stress

A seminar on “Managing Stress During Challenging Times” is scheduled from noon till 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, in Wesley Hall at Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield. Admission is free. Those attending are encouraged to bring a bag lunch. Drinks and desserts will be provided.

Volunteers sought

The Fuller Center for Housing, a nonprofit agency that works to end poverty, is seeking donations and volunteers to build and rehabilitate housing for people in need. The Johnston County Animal Protection League is seeking donations for its yard sale in June. To arrange for pickup, call 422-6002.

Babysitting safely

Want your child to learn how to handle emergencies while babysitting? Johnston Health will offer a safe sitter course from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m. June 18 and 19 in Room 1404A of the Medical Mall in Smithfield. Targeted at children ages 11 through 13, the two-day class offers medically accurate instruction on basic childcare, lifesaving techniques and accident prevention. It also includes a session on how and when to call for help. To enroll, call the education department of Johnston Medical Center at 938-7736. The fee is $60.

Work after 50

The JobLink Career Center in Smithfield will offer a workshop titled “Steps to Finding the Work You Want After 50.” The workshop is scheduled from 9 till 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Capital Area JobLink on the campus of Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Parenting workshop

A parenting workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Room J1630 of the Public Safety Services Building at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Admission is free. Dr. Joyce Willard Teal of Dallas, Texas, will speak. She is the author of numerous parenting books, including “Are You Raising One of the Next Generation of Hoodlums?”

A day for seniors

Senior Citizen Day is scheduled from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. Friday, May 22, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. The event will feature entertainment, food and door prizes. For more information, call 553-1555.

Cleveland Library

The Cleveland Library is now open from 6 till 9 p.m. Thursdays. Other hours are 6 till 9 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Saturdays. The library is at 5533 N.C. 42 in the Cleveland community.
