Juneteenth festival

Music in Smithfield

Singer-guitarist Scott Aker will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Orchard House Booksellers, 117 N. 3rd St., Smithfield. Admission is free; refreshments will be available.

Singing Convention

The 89th State Annual Singing Convention will take place June 26-28 in the Singing Grove on Main Street in downtown Benson. Here’s the schedule: Friday, June 26 — 7 till 10 p.m., 30-minutes concerts with The Taylors, Fortress, Precious Jewels, The Maple, Arise and the Trinity Quartet. Saturday, June 27 — 10 a.m. till 10 p.m., competition. Sunday, June 28 — 10 a.m. till 5 p.m., round-robin singing. The Palmetto State Quartet, this year’s host group, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. A worship service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday. Admission to all singing is free.

Concert series

Abbey Road Live, a Beatles tribute band, will perform from 7 till 9 p.m. Thursday, June 18, on the Town Square at Main and Fayetteville streets in downtown Clayton. Admission is free. Book discussion

Readers who want to discuss the meaning behind William Paul Young’s “The Shack” are invited to attend a discussion at the Orchard House Booksellers at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25. Joe Hester, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield, will lead the meeting. The bookstore is located at 117 N. Third St., Smithfield. Attendance is limited to the first 20 people, and attendees should register in advance. For details, call 938-1511.

Children’s program

Elaine Forman will present a program on butterflies and caterpillars from 10 till 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at Orchard House Booksellers, 117 N. 3rd St., Smithfield. Forman is children’s librarian at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield. Admission is free.

Tres Chicas in Clayton

Alternative country band Tres Chicas will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. The trio — Lynn Blakely, Caitlin Cary and Tonya Lynn — met one another over the years and became friends when their bands shared bills on concerts. A club owner dubbed them Tres Chicas in a newspaper advertisement, and the name stuck. Tickets for the June 25 concert are $5, plus service fees. Tickets are available by phone at 553-1737, online at theclaytoncenter.com and in the box office.
