This is the last in a four-part series about successful graduates of Johnston Community College. JCC is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2009. An open house is scheduled from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, on the Smithfield campus.Chad Stewart of Four Oaks was a late bloomer out of high school who couldn't stay focused on academics as a freshman at N.C. State University. But four years in the U.S. Navy taught him maturity, responsibility and the importance of education.
After his military service, Stewart enrolled at Johnston Community College, knowing that was the start of his quest for a four-year degree.
"JCC was a stepping stone for me to get back into the classroom so I could further my education and find a good-paying job," Stewart says.
Stewart went on to Campbell University and received his bachelor's degree in business administration. He is the owner and operator of Holiday Travel Mart, where locals can buy groceries, fill their gas tanks and get their cars serviced all in one stop.
"I credit JCC with giving me the momentum and drive I needed to get serious about my future," Stewart says. "My instructors really kept me motivated and made me want to continue my education and not give up.
"As a small-business owner for 15 years, JCC has definitely helped me succeed in the working world."
