Health fair

Need a health screening or information about a health-related topic? More than 35 vendors and agencies will answer questions and do health checks during a health fair from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. Sept. 12 inside Johnston Health Medical Mall North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. Sponsored by HealthQuest and the education department of Johnston Medical Center of Smithfield, the event is open to the public, and all activities are free. For more information, call 938-7581.

Free prostate screening

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in American men. Yet it is 100-percent survivable if detected early. Johnston Medical Center of Smithfield will offer free prostate screening from 1 till 5 p.m. Sept. 21. Those interested must schedule an appointment by calling Kim Thompson in the education department at 938-7736.

Open house at Women's Pavilion

Thinking of having a baby? Come tour the Women's Pavilion at Johnston Medical Center of Smithfield. Meet the staff and the primary-care and OB/GYN doctors who provide medical services. Baby gifts, music and refreshments are also part of the open house, from 3 till 6 p.m. Sept. 27.

For new parents

New parents are invited to childbirth and Lamaze classes Sept. 12 and 19 in Room 1404B of the Medical Mall. The first Saturday session is from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. The second Saturday session is from 8 a.m. till noon. The fee for the classes is $80 per couple. Pre-registration is a must. Call 938-7736.

Breastfeeding class

Want to learn about the advantages of breastfeeding your baby? New parents are invited to a class from 6:30 till 9:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in Room 1404A of the Medical Mall. The fee is $30 per couple.

Advanced Life Support

Want to learn advanced cardiac life support or pediatric advanced life support? An ACLS class will meet from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Sept. 17-18 in the Medical Mall. The first session will be held in room 1404A. The second session will be held in the auditorium. A PALS class will meet from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Sept. 10-11 in the mall auditorium. To register for either class, call 938-7736. The fee is $200.

CPR class

Want to learn CPR or need to re-certify? A beginner's class will meet from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in Room 1404B of the Medical Mall. A re-certification class will meet from 1 till 4 p.m. Sept. 16 in Room 1404B. To register, call 938-7736. The fee for each class is $67 and includes materials.

Diabetes class

Want to learn how to better manage your diabetes? A class for outpatients will meet from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m. Sept. 22 in Room 1404A of the Medical Mall. Participants must have orders from their doctors to attend and must contact the hospital's scheduling department for an appointment. Insurance will be filed.

Offering support

If you've lost a loved one or have been diagnosed with cancer or diabetes, you can find information and encouragement from others in support groups. A grief support group will meet from 6 till 7 p.m. Sept. 22 in Room 1404A of the Medical Mall. A cancer support group will meet from 6 till 8 p.m. Sept. 22 in Room 1404B. A diabetes support group will meet from 6 till 8 p.m. Sept. 15 in rooms 1404A and B. The events are free.
