Derrick Lee Barefoot has received the Eagle Award, Boy Scouting's highest honor. He is the first Eagle Scout in the 105-year history of Hood's Grove Baptist Church.
Barefoot is the son of Barbara Harris Barefoot and Ricky Lee Barefoot of Newton Grove. He is the grandson of Alvin and Annie Ruth Harris of Grantham and the late Sherrill and Rachel Barefoot of Newton Grove.
Barefoot is a member of Troop 77 and a junior assistant scoutmaster in Smithfield. He is a junior at South Johnston High School.
Separately, Barefoot has been chosen for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. Membership offers many benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications and online forums.
This summer, Barefoot took part in the seventh annual Shelton Challenge, a weeklong leadership-development program. Young people take part in team exercises and role playing while learning about leadership styles, situational leadership, goal setting, integrity, ethical decision-making and social responsibility.
The camp is named for Gen. Hugh Shelton, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Gary A. Jones of Selma will graduate Oct. 5 from the Certified Public Manager Program of North Carolina State Government. He is superintendent of Johnston Correctional Institution.
The Certified Public Manager Program is designed to increase the quality, efficiency and productivity of state government ment by improving the leadership skills of managers. The program consists of 10 courses and a project.At Johnston Correctional Institution, Jones works with a staff of 256 employees at the medium-security prison, which houses 640 inmates. He is the son of Garland Ethro and Lois Rudean Jones.
Michael Carter of North Johnston High School attended the seventh annual Shelton Challenge at N.C. State University in Raleigh. He is the son of Dennis and Elizabeth Carter of Selma.

"The Shelton Challenge is by far the best camp or activity that I have ever attended," Carter said. "It was fun, taught me new things and improved my leadership abilities greatly."

Carly Ramsey was crowned Baby Miss Princess of North Carolina during a pageant in Goldsboro. She received a $1,000 Savings Bond.
Carly is the 2-year-old daughter of Todd and Jodi Ramsey of Selma. She is the granddaughter of Lonnie and Pam Parrish of Selma and Jim and Pat Ramsey of Graham.
Sarah McEntire of Four Oaks is a new junior member of the American Angus Association, the largest beef-registry association in the world.
Junior members are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association. Also, they may take part in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association, and they may enter association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.
