Lawrence W. Williams, 83, of 109 Hill St., Smithfield, died Friday, Sept. 25, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.

Born Oct. 28, 1925, in Johnston County, Mr. Williams was the son of the late Joseph and Myrtle Williams. He was the widower of Mamie Williams. Mr. Williams' passion was managing the Greyton Tigers, the community baseball team. He was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church and Golden Link Lodge No. 205.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at St. Mark AME Church in Smithfield. The Rev. Sheridan Knight will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery.

Surviving are two stepdaughters, Minnie Bridges and Lou Glenda Gupton, both of the home; a sister, Carole Williams of Camden, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 till 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30., at R.L. Sanders Funeral Home, 806 E. Market St., Smithfield.
