Daniel Kornegay of Princeton High School has placed first in the tractor operator's competition in the Johnston FFA Federation. The son of Owen and Abby Kornegay, he will compete in the state contest in February 2010 in Raleigh. At Princeton, Kornegay's advisers are Julie Capps and Bryant Wellons.Sisters Clair and Danielle Williams have been named winners of the U.S. National Honor Student Award. They attend Four Oaks Middle School. Clair and Danielle are the daughters of Eddie and Geralyn Williams of Four Oaks. They are the granddaughters of JoAn Klisiewecz of Benson, the late Roland Klisiewecz Jr., Norma Williams of Hope Mills and the late Paul Williams.
The South Johnston High School class of 1974 will hold its 35-year reunion Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Preston Woodall House, 201 E. Hill St., Benson. The Four Oaks High School class of 1969 will hold its 40-year reunion Saturday, Oct. 31, in the gym at Four Oaks School. The reunion will be part of the Cardinal reunion. The cost is the same.

They were Elizabeth Cater, Hanna Dunn, Joshua Godwin, Ercilia Hernandez, Reed Johnson, Catherine Lee, David Lee, Eric Lee, Priscilla Martinez, Jensen McLamb, Carla Parker, Michelle Parker, Sandra Ross, Nathan Slaughter, Russell Thornton, Michael Westbrook, Zachary Williams and Qicong Zhang.
Kimberle Aycock, who teaches fourth-grade math, is Johnston County's Outstanding Elementary Math Teacher. The award is given by the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Aycock will receive her award Oct. 29 in Greensboro.
Three West Johnston High School students have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarships. They are James Pearson, Kate Pearson and Stephanie Tolar. They will compete for 8,200 scholarships worth more than $36 million.
The Pearsons are the children of Robert and Nancy Pearson of Smithfield. Tolar is the daughter of Steve and Donna Tolar of Willow Spring.

The Parent Teacher Association at Powhatan Elementary School will hold its second annual 5K RACE and Health & Safety Expo on Saturday, Oct. 10. (RACE is short for Run to Accelerate our Children's Education.) The event will feature a 5-kilometer race, a 5K walk, a one-mile fun run for children 12 and younger and a kids' dash for children 5 and younger. The Johnston County school system has named its Employee of the Month for September. She is Juanita Taylor, who works in the school system's business office.
Her nomination form read: "She is always there to help, whether it's a job within her department or just a favor to help complete a task for a co-worker."
