A gift to the Johnston Community College Foundation will provide a scholarship this school year to a nursing-assistant student.
The gift came from Jane Evans of Smithfield. A graduate of JCC's nursing-assistant program, she hopes to study nursing at the college.
In 2008-09, nearly 300 students enrolled in JCC's nursing-assistant program. While interest in the program continues to rise, many students need help with tuition, books, uniforms and other fees.
"I chose to give this gift because I wanted to help someone get the training needed for a job and do something for JCC at the same time," Evans said. "When I took CNA training, there were people in my class who had to postpone taking the state licensing exam for lack of money. I want to make sure that someone who needs this help can get all the way through."
JCC President David Johnson thanked Evans for her support of the college's nursing-assistant program."The College Foundation is extremely grateful for the support from all our private donors as we seek to fulfill the community college mission," Johnson said. "This gift, in particular, will provide an educational opportunity for students in an area that is critically needed and will enable them to fulfill a career in health care. We are most thankful."
