1968 - Local groups, including many black residents, rallied against a Ku Klux Klan billboard at the entrance to Smithfield. The groups called for an opposing sign stating that the Klan's sign did not represent the town's views. An outbreak of racial violence was attributed to the sign, which read "This is KLAN Country ... Help fight Communism & Integration!"
