Charles Earl Hopkins, 71, of Kathy Circle, Smithfield, died Saturday, Oct. 10, at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.

Born Aug. 7, 1938, in Johnston County, Mr. Hopkins was a son of the late James Earl and Virginia Stafford Hopkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Smithfield.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Lee Colbert officiated.

Surviving are his wife, Lawanda Langley Hopkins; a son, Charles Earl Hopkins Jr. of Smithfield; a daughter, Lisa Hopkins of Smithfield; four brothers, Jerry Hopkins of Wilson's Mills, James Hopkins of Smithfield, Ronnie Hopkins of Selma and Harry Hopkins of Puerto Rico; a sister, Barbara Langdon of Selma; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church, 202 S. 4th St., Smithfield, N.C. 27577.
