1901 - Construction of First Baptist Church got under way on South Fourth Street in Smithfield, and The Herald reported that it would be "a handsome building." A Smithfield woman won a mattress for having the best pound cake at the N.C. State Fair, and the Benson Organ Co. advertised its instruments for use in people's homes.
