1915 - A fire broke out at two stores on Third Street in Smithfield, one of which was the City Grocery. Both businesses planned to rebuild immediately. The Herald reported that Ford cars were beginning to make the trip from Smithfield to Washington, D.C., in as little as two and a half days.
