(Players must be 5 as of Dec. 31.) The cost is $35 for Town of Smithfield residents or $55 for non-residents. Practices will begin in late November with games starting in December. Register at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center or online at smithfieldparksandrec.com.Fall Basketball ClinicA fall basketball clinic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. The clinic will be led by James Robinson, boys' basketball coach at Smithfield Middle School. Kids ages 5-8 will attend from 9 until noon; children ages 9-14 will have a clinic from 1-4 p.m. Registration is $20 in advance or $25 the day of the clinic. Checks should be made payable to James Robinson. Register at the SRAC.Lifeguard TrainingA lifeguard training class will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center in December. Participants must be age 15 or older, able to swim 300 yards and able to swim 20 yards on their back while holding a 10-pound weight. Classes will be held Dec. 21-23 and 28-29 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants must attend all classes. The registration fee is $20 and is due before the qualifying activities; the course fee is $130 for Town of Smithfield residents and $150 for others. All fees are due by Dec. 22.Bridge ClubThe area club meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Smithfield Operations Center. Drop-ins are welcome. Winners from the Oct. 27 session were Alfred Taylor and Perry Boone (61.81 percent), James Creech Jr. and Madge Pierce (56.25), Lucille Markle and Frances Hilliard (56.25), Lee Johnson and Paul Johnson III (54.86), Beverly Wells and Louise Watson (54.17) and Barbara King and Patricia Stallings (50.00).Johnston County YMCAContact: 773-3621www.triangleymca.orgYouth Winter BasketballRegistration for Coed Winter Basketball for boys and girls ages 4 through the second grade is now open. Register online at ymcatriangle.org (select the Johnston County branch). Participants must turn 4 years old by Jan. 5. The season will begin in January and runs through March 4. Leagues will be offered in Clayton and the McGee's Crossroads community. The fee is $66 per player, which includes a jersey and trophy. Sign-ups end Dec. 11. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. The cost for Town of Selma residents is $25 or $30 for non-residents. Teams will begin practice after Thanksgiving with games being played in January and February. Games will be played Friday evenings and Saturdays. The deadline to register is Nov. 2.Gobble-Gobble ShootoutParticipants in this basketball foul shooting contest will have the chance to take home a turkey on Saturday, Nov. 21. The best shooter in four divisions (9-and-under, 10-13, 14-17 and 18-and-older) will win a turkey. The cost is $2 per person. Registration is required by Nov. 18. Registration forms are available in the Selma Parks Dept. office.
