PRINCETON - Two write-in candidates made a strong showing in last week's election but fell short by a couple of dozen votes.

Former mayor David Holt mounted a write-in campaign against incumbent Donald Rains, while incumbent commissioner Billy Sutton made a last-minute decision to try to hold onto his seat for another term.

Sutton said he initially decided not to file for reelection, but a number of residents wanted him to stay on the board. "I was recruited by a lot of people," he said. "It seemed like they were backing me."

About a week before the election, Sutton decided to mount a write-in campaign. He put out fliers and went around talking to people. His name was also on fliers promoting Holt for mayor.

Sutton said he was not seeking to unseat incumbent commissioner David Starling.

"I just wanted to work for the town," Sutton said. "Me and David Starling have worked real well over the past four years."

Though he trailed Larry Withrow by 22 votes, Sutton said he still had a shot at winning if enough provisional ballots went his way. Newly annexed Princeton residents had to cast provisional ballots. The results of that count were not available before The Herald went to press.

Holt could not be reached for comment.
