Doctor earns master's degree

Dr. Ghulam M. Shaikh, an internal-medicine specialist, has earned a master's degree in health science and clinical leadership from Duke University.

Dr. Shaikh, 47, is in private practice at 171 Mast Drive in the Cleveland community.

Shaikh is board certified in internal medicine, and he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is on the medical staffs of Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield and WakeMed.

Restaurant opens

Cinema Café and Lounge has opened at 137 S. 3rd St. in downtown Smithfield. The casual-dining restaurant offers American cuisine and features hand-cut steaks.

Hours are 11 a.m. till midnight Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. till 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

I-95 resurfacing

The state has awarded a contract to resurface 7.3 miles of Interstate 95 in Johnston County. C.C. Mangum Co. of Raleigh won the $2 million contact to resurface the highway from mile marker 99.8 near U.S. 70 to mile marker 107.1 near U.S. 301 in Kenly.

Work can start as early as Nov. 30 and is scheduled for completion by Aug. 1, 2010.

Grant for hunger

The Salvation Army has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. The Salvation Army will use the gift to feed the families in need throughout Johnston County.

Weatherization

Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action has received a grant to help needy Johnstonians weatherize their homes. For more information, call 919-934-2145 and ask for a weatherization counselor.

Meeting notices

The Democratic Men of Johnston County will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Parkside Café, 2175 U.S. 70-A, Pine Level. Stephen Gheen and Cathy Moore will speak on Johnston County's voting performance in 2008. They will also explore the next election cycle. The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will meet at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at the Johnston County Public Health Department on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield.

The Johnston Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Room 101 of the Health Sciences Building on the JCC campus, 245 College Road, Smithfield.
