A team from Polenta Elementary School won this year's Adult Spelling Bee, which raised about $14,000 for the Johnston County Education Foundation.
Polenta team members were Alice Overby, Anna Gardner, Kristin Row and Randi Warren. They received an Olympic-style medallion and a $50 gift certificate to Clayton Steak House.
The top student team came from West Johnston High School. Team members were Kate Pearson, Lindsey Anderson, Tyler May and Briana Phillips. They received a plaque for their school.
A team from KS Bank won the financial-institution division. Team members were Sarah Caldwell, Blair Hester, Rhonda Olive and Chastity Cole.
The top spellers in business and industry came from Johnston Health. Team members were Laura Vaughn, Dr. Tony Liverman, Dr. Gina Ryan and Dr. Sally Carpenter.
The Best Costume Award went to a team from Sysco Food Services in Selma. Team members were Pam Philipson, Steve Merlino, Michele Brown and Tim Stillwell.
The Spirit Award went to a team from McGee's Crossroads Elementary School. Team members were Janet Smith, Sharon Scholz, Mandy Bowden and Allyson Bond.
Dr. Ken Brinson of N.C. State University was the word caller. Ciara Ellis, the reigning Miss Johnston County Outstanding Teen, displayed the correctly spelled words. The timekeeper was Ted Godwin.
