SMITHFIELD - Clayton and Garner made the biggest splashes Thursday night as Smithfield-Selma and the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference baptized the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center with a pair of high school quad meets.

The Comets used their overall strength to sweep county rivals West Johnston and Smithfield-Selma, along with conference newcomer Harnett Central in the evening's opening meet.

Garner relied on its numbers to register a sweep of Wake County rivals East Wake, Knightdale and Southeast Raleigh in the nightcap.

Clayton's boys used eight event victories along with four second-place finishes and seven thirds while amassing 199 points in splashing away from runner-up West Johnston, which scored a pair of event wins en route to 115 points.

Smithfield-Selma, with 94 points, placed third while Harnett Central managed 79 points.

On the girls' side, the Comets benefitted from five wins and three seconds to hold off West, which combined two wins, five seconds and five thirds, 150-143.

Harnett Central captured five events to make the outcome a tight three-way battle, finishing with 139 points while SSS managed 70 points.

Leading the way for the Comets boys were Erik Biggs, Trevor Parris, Nolan Quinn, David Barnes and Austin Hopkins - all earning individual wins.

Biggs captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.54 and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.12.
