Scholarship winner

Brandon Allen, a senior at West Johnston High School, has received a $1,000 Yamaha Scholarship from the Music for All Foundation. The scholarship goes to high school seniors planning to pursue degrees in music education.

At West Johnston, Allen is the marching band's drum major and principal flautist.

Fifth-place finish

Stefanie Freeman, a senior at West Johnston High School, placed fifth in a digital-graphics contest at the N.C. State Fair. She won $60 and a ribbon.

Barton scholarship

Caroline A. Byrd of Smithfield, a transfer from Johnston Community College, has received a Transfer High Honors Scholarship to attend Barton College. The renewable scholarship will cover $3,000 of tuition for the year.

Byrd is the daughter of Andy and Helyn Byrd of Smithfield. She will enter Barton College in the spring semester and plans to major in nursing.
