Michael Smith says he wouldn't have succeeded in life without the help of others.
So the Zaxby's restaurant owner says it's only fitting that he share some of his success so that others might have opportunities to pursue their dreams.
"If I can help people in any way, then I believe I've done my part as a human being," Smith said.
Smith, 28, recently made a significant gift to the Johnston Community College Foundation, becoming the title sponsor for the men's basketball team.
Smith was born without his left hand and said he overcame many challenges growing up. Still, Smith says, he never let his disability affect his motivation to succeed.
Smith and his wife, Kelly, are partners in the Smithfield and Clayton Zaxby's franchises. A native of High Point, Smith got his start in the restaurant business at age 14, washing dishes at a barbecue restaurant. He quickly moved up the ladder and became a general manager of the McDonald's in Clayton at 19.
" 'Can't' wasn't a word in my home growing up," Smith said. "I never thought there was anything I couldn't do."
His donation will help purchase uniforms and equipment and provide scholarships for the Jaguars, who are starting their second season.
JCC President David Johnson thanked the Smiths for their commitment to the college. "We are extremely grateful for this gift by Michael and Kelly Smith of Zaxby's to support our athletics program," Johnson said. "We appreciate the support and commitment to our college and its mission to provide opportunities for others."
Smith said he hopes his gesture will encourage other businesses to support worthy causes like JCC. "The fact that we can help kids in this way makes me happy," he said. "We're not interested in becoming millionaires. We're just interested in being a part of our community and serving. I want to be known as the guy who owned a chicken restaurant and made a name for himself helping people."
