SMITHFIELD - Smithfield-Selma's girls basketball team avenged an earlier loss to West Johnston last week with a 37-30 win.
The Spartans (8-10 overall, 2-6 conference entering this week) scored 21 points in the final quarter of play, including a stretch of 11-of-12 free throws in the final four minutes of play to take the victory.
Tori Kearney helped lead SSS's victory with a game-high 16 points.
West Johnston defeated Smithfield-Selma in late December in a non-conference holiday tournament tilt.
The Wildcats led by as many as eight points in the second half and was up with 2:30 to play before the Spartans pulled back ahead.
The win marked SSS's second of three solid outings for the week. The Spartans held Southeast Raleigh to 38 points in a 38-25 loss on Jan. 19, before falling to Knightdale 54-48 on Friday night. Kearney scored 18 points for SSS agiainst the Knights.
The Spartans meet Southeast again this Friday.
