Civil War dance

This summer's "2nd Saturdays" series at Bentonville Battlefield wraps up Aug. 14. The program, from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m., will focus on the importance of community dances as a diversion for soldiers and civilians from the harsh realities of life during the Civil War. Re-enactors will provide dance instruction and demonstrations, accompanied by a 19th-century- style band. Artisans and vendors will have goods for sale. Admission is free. Basic budgeting

"Show Me the Money," a workshop in basic budgeting skills, will meet at 3 p.m. Aug. 10 at Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, 1102 Massey St., Smithfield. Participants will learn how to decrease spending, keep a daily spending diary and complete an income and expenses worksheet.

The workshop is free. Community Action will offer it a second time at 10 a.m. Aug. 24. To register for either session, call 934-2145.

Free markets, economic literacy

A seminar on free markets and economic literacy is scheduled from 6 till 9:45 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 4-5, at the Hibachi Grill, 1237 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. Loren Spivack will present the seminar. He has been a marketing and management consultant for companies and nonprofits. Admission is free. Spivack will accept donations. The seminar is a project of the Johnston County Republican Women.

Reagan Day Dinner

The Johnston County Republican Party will hold its annual Reagan Day Dinner on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Agricultural Center, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield. A reception for sponsors is scheduled for 5 p.m. Dinner will follow at 6. Congressional candidate Renee Ellmers will speak, and The Seaside Band will perform. End-of-summer camp

The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will offer end-of-summer camps. Sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. till noon Aug. 9-13 and Aug. 16-20 at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road. The camps will offer outdoor play, swimming, games, art, snacks and movies. The cost is $45 for Smithfield residents and $55 for all others. For more information, call 934-2148.

Firemen's Day

Firemen's Day is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. till 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the 50-210 Community Volunteer Fire Department, 50 Greenleaf Road near McGee's Crossroads. Plates of barbecued chicken will go on sale at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $7 per plate. Hot dogs and drinks will be available for $2. A bounce house for kids will be open, and classic cars and tractors will be on display. The Hickory Grove Quartet will perform in the afternoon. A bake sale and auction will begin at 6 p.m. A reverse drawing will award a $500 grand prize. Tickets for that are $20. Bingo in Selma

Bingo play for older adults is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at McDonald's on U.S. 70 near Interstate 95 in Selma. Play is free, with prizes awarded. For more information, call 975-1411.

Autism walk

A benefit walk will get under way at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 40 Durant Road, Wilson's Mills. Proceeds will go to the Autism Society of North Carolina. For more information, call Rachel Martin at 242-3471.

Prostate screening

Johnston Health will hold its annual prostate screening from 1 till 5 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Mohamed & Lippitt Urology Center, which is located in the Medical Arts Pavilion of Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. It's recommended that men over age 40 get tested for the disease. The risk of prostate cancer increases with age and is more prevalent among blacks than other races. The fee will be $15. A representative from the hospital's business office will be available to take money and file insurance paperwork. To schedule an appointment, call 938-7736.

Retirees to meet

The Johnston County Retired and Active Federal Employees will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Golden Corral on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge will speak.

Genealogy workshop

A genealogy workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. Rob and Catherine Elias will present two sessions: "Following the Trail of Your Welsh Ancestors" and "Writing Your Ancestor's Story: A Civil War Case Study." The cost is $5 for members of the Johnston County Genealogical & Historical Society and $10 for all others. For more information, call the Johnston County Heritage Center at 934-2836.
