Gospel in Kenly

The Browns & Browns II will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Kenly Gospel Music Hall on West Second Street in Kenly. Admission is free.

Duo to perform

The Definite Maybes, an acoustic duo, will perform from 7:30 till 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Clubhouse Restaurant Bar & Grill, 51-A Technology Drive in the Cleveland community. The group will also perform from 9 p.m. till midnight Saturday, Oct. 9, at The Flipside, 408 E. 2nd St., Clayton.

Comedy in Clayton

Cee-Jay is the headliner this week at Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 8928 U.S. 70 Business West, Clayton. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, and 8 and 10:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9. Ticket prices range from $12 to $14. On Tuesday, Oct. 12, the club welcomes comedian Pauly Shore. While Shore's 8 p.m. show is sold out, tickets, which are $27.50, were still available at press time for the 10 p.m. performance. Arts-in-Healthcare

The next Arts-in-Healthcare program is scheduled from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the lobby of Johnston Medical Center of Clayton, 2076 N.C. 42 West, Clayton. The program will feature Linda Streving, owner of The Creative Lady, an arts and crafts business. She will show how to make a mosaic table top using pieces of glass. Also, her husband, Larry, will make beveled glass snowflakes.

New cookbook

Edith Lee Casey of Little Creek Church Road, Clayton, has written a new cookbook, "Memories of Food, People and Places." She will sign copies of the book from 10 till 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, 100 S. Church St., Clayton. Also, she will sign copies from 10 a.m. till noon Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Johnston County Heritage Center, 241 E. Market St., Smithfield.

Music in Smithfield

Classical guitarist Michael Fitzgerald will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Orchard House Booksellers, 117 N. 3rd St., Smithfield. Admission is free; concessions are available.

Art in Clayton

Artwork by the ChromaZones is on display through Oct. 29 at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. A reception for the artists is scheduled from 6 till 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7. The ChromaZones are 14 artists, including two from Clayton, John McFadden and Cheryl McCardle. Admission to the reception and The Clayton Center gallery are free.

Comedian at JCC

Comedian Tim Hawkins will perform at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17.50 at door. They're available via phone at 209-2099, online at jccperformingarts.com and in the auditorium box office, which is open from 1:30 till 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Open house at studio

Johnston County artist Jane Kate Brown will open her studio to the public this month. Open house hours are 4-6 p.m. Oct. 6 and Oct. 13. The studio is at 177 Lisa Drive, Princeton. For more information, call 965-9785.

Comedian in Clayton

Comedian Jon Reep will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St., Clayton. Reep is a winner of NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and star of the Dodge hemi commercials. He fashions himself a "Metro Jethro" - a small-town Southerner who lives a big city life and finds humor in both worlds. Tickets are $25. They're available online at theclaytoncenter.com, by phone at 553-1737 and from The Clayton Center box office, which is from 10 a.m. till noon and from 1 till 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Writer in Smithfield

Novelist Zelda Lockhart will read from her latest novel at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. Lockhart is the author of "Fifth Born II: The Hundreth Turtle," set in Harlem and rural Mississippi in the late 1970s and 1980s; "Cold Running Creek," a historical novel, and "Fifth Born," a 2002 Barnes & Noble Discovery selection. Lockhart lives in Durham.

Darkside Estates

Darkside Haunted Estates, a haunted adventure, returns this month to 11875 N.C. 222 West, Middlesex. Hours are 7-10 p.m. Oct. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 and 29-31. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. A "low scare" night for kids is scheduled from 7 till 9 p.m. Oct. 28. Admission is $5. Concessions will be available. A portion of the proceeds will go to Branch Chapel Baptist Church and to a benefit for Clay Glover, a 10-year-old who suffered permanent brain damage when he slipped into a pool at 18 months old.
