Every other Sunday, The Herald spotlights a local church in "Houses of Worship." We're hoping to give our readers a better picture of Johnston County's vast religious offerings.

Pastors who want to feature their churches should send an email to ccampbell@newsobserver.com.

In its latest effort to grow its congregation, First Assembly of God in Smithfield is going after the age group least likely to attend church: young adults in their 20s.

That's the age when people move around frequently, and they might not have started a family yet. For many of them, finding a church to join on Sunday mornings isn't a priority.

First Assembly recently started a special Sunday evening service for that group. Called Converge, the contemporary worship service features a praise band and lots of multimedia. Pastor Mark Summers said the church gets rocking during the service and it's been a popular addition to First Assembly's offerings.

And though First Assembly's private school, Johnston Christian Academy, shut down several years ago, the church still has countless programs for kids and teens, from Missionettes clubs and Royal Rangers to Children's Church services.

Location: 923 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield, across from Smithfield-Selma High School.

Affiliation: Assemblies of God.

Contact information: 919-934-5762 or www.fas1.org.

The pastor: Mark Summers. Born in the Midwest, Summers was called to First Assembly of God in October 2009. He has been in the ministry for 26 years, serving churches in Texas, Missouri and Kansas. "I became a pastor because I sincerely felt that God called me, and I could not escape the sense of his call," Summers said.

The pastor on what sets his church apart: There are few real differences in Christian churches, as long as they teach from the Scriptures a salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. I think one unique thing about First Assembly is the welcome of all people, groups and races.

Special programs: Children's and youth ministries, clothing closet, budgeting class, pastoral counseling, Converge young-adult service, after-school care, midweek service in the Coffee House, Bible study for women, men's ministries and Moms in Touch.

Last Sunday's sermon: "The Good Life: Being Content," from a series on "The Good Life."

Dress code: Casual.

Service time: 10:30 a.m. Sundays, following an Inspiration Hour at 9:30.
