Black history at JCC

Johnston Community College is celebrating Black History Month. All events are free. For more details, call Della McMillian at 464-2282 or Jane K. Robbins at 464-2380.

Throughout February, "A Reflection of Negro History Through the Eye of a Lens" will be on display from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Frank Creech Art Gallery. The photos from the private collection of Craig James include daguerreotypes, amber types and tintypes from the 19th century.

On Feb. 15, students can take part in a Black History Quiz Bowl from noon until 2 p.m. in Room 160 of the Elsee Building.

A Black Business Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the lobby of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. Local businesses and health professionals will be on hand offering information about their products and services.

The Gospel Fest is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. This year's program will feature traditional and modern gospel music.

Soup, sandwiches

A soup and sandwich lunch is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Masonic lodge on South Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. The cost is $6, with proceeds going to scholarships.

Cookies on sale

Girl Scout cookies have gone on sale at booths across Johnston County. To find the one nearest you, go to nccoastalpines.org and click on the thin mint in the lower left corner.

Booth sales will continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 12.

Day trip for kids, grandparents

The Selma Parks and Recreation Department invites children and their grandparents to travel to Raleigh on Friday, March 30. Stops include the Marbles Museum and the N.C. Museum of Life and Science. Bring a bag lunch; drinks will be provided.

The cost is $40 per person, and the deadline to register is March 9. For more information, call 975-1411.

Meeting notices

The Johnston County Board of Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the courthouse in Smithfield. In the morning, commissioners will hear the state's plan for paying for Interstate 95 improvements with tolls.

In the evening, commissioners will hear a request to allow a community center at 1251 Sanders Road near McGee's Crossroads.

The Selma Town Council will hold a budget meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in the Selma Jernigan Building, 106 E. Anderson St., Selma. The council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, also in the Selma Jernigan Building. That meeting was originally scheduled for Feb. 14.

Valentine's Ball

Harbor Inc. will hold its seventh annual Valentine's Ball from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Preston Woodall House in Benson. Tickets are $125 per person and include cocktails, a four-course dinner and dancing to The Upbeats. A silent auction will also be held. Trees for sale

The Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for loblolly pines, Eastern red cedars and hardwoods. Available hardwoods include wax myrtle, Eastern redbud, black walnut, common persimmon and bald cypress. Orders will be taken until supplies run out. Pines will be sold in bundles of 25. Cedars and hardwoods will be sold in bundles of 10. Seedling prices are $10 per bundle. Distribution of the seedlings will be Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Johnston County Agricultural Center, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield. To place an order, call 934-7156, Ext. 3.

Senior citizen bingo

Bingo play for older adults is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at McDonald's, 335 U.S. 70 East, Selma. Play is free, with prizes awarded. For more information, call 975-1411.

Retirees to meet

The Johnston County chapter of the National Association for Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Golden Corral on East Market Street near Interstate 95 in Smithfield.

Cornhole tournament

A cornhole tournament is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Princeton High School gym. Proceeds will go to Cub Scout Pack 23. The cost is $40 and includes two event T-shirts and entry into the winner-take-all, double-elimination tournament. Hot dogs and other concessions will be available. AARP tax help

The AARP is preparing tax returns for older adults and low-income taxpayers. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, tax preparers will be at the Community and Senior Services office, 1363 W. Market St., Smithfield. The service sends April 13. Filers must bring their Social Security card or Medicare card and last year's tax return. To schedule an appointment, call 934-6066.

Flapjack fundraiser

A pancake breakfast to benefit the Johnston County Mental Health Association is scheduled from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Applebee's, 1260 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. For tickets, call Marie Dodson at 934-0311.

Antiques Evening

An Antiques Evening is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Princeton Public Library, 101 Dr. Donnie H. Jones Jr. Blvd., Princeton. 4-H club seeks members

The Clover Roots 4-H Club is looking for home-schooled children ages 5-10 who would like to join. The club meets at 2 p.m. Thursdays, once or twice a month, in the Rock Pillar Road area. Last year, meeting topics included culture, seashells, building a slip-and-slide out of recycled materials, incubating and hatching chicken eggs, tie-and-dye, a polygraph demonstration and fishing. Daddy-Daughter Dance

The 15th annual Daddy-Daughter Dance, for dads and daughters ages 3-14, is scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield.

The cost is $45 for Smithfield residents and $50 for nonresidents. The cost includes entertainment, appetizers and a photo. Reservations must be made and paid by Feb. 10. For more information, call 934-2148.

Registration open for MS walks

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has opened registration for this year's walks in Raleigh and Goldsboro.

The Triangle walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, at the RBC Center in Raleigh. The Goldsboro walk will take place Saturday, April 21, in Herman Park.
