Nathaniel Stafford of Princeton Middle School has been named a North Carolina youth volunteer of the year by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring outstanding young volunteers.
Nathaniel raised $10,000 to buy mosquito bed nets for 1,000 families in Africa. He raised the money by hiking 100 miles in nine days, volunteering at a local restaurant and conducting a coin drive at his school.
Matthew Glenn Pope has won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Pope is the son of Tim and Angela Pope of Nashville, formerly of Kenly. He is the grandson of Jean Bass of Kenly, the late Roy Pope, Glenda Peedin of Pine Level and the late Randy Peedin.
Pope is a student at Nash Central High School in Rocky Mount.
