Red and White Dance

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 270 will hold its Annual Red and White Dance at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at the post home, 805 Martin St., Smithfield. DeAndra Wilson will receive a scholarship. Democratic Women to meet Feb. 23

The Democratic Women of Johnston County will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the fellowship hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 S. Second St., Smithfield. The women will preview and start organizing activities for the 2012 election. Members are asked to bring items for the backpack program.

Black History Month

The Johnston County Heritage Center’s Black History Committee is paying tribute this month to African-American Masonic lodges and Eastern Star chapters that have served Johnstonians for more than a century.

A program is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, in the Wall-Ennis Gymnasium at South Campus School, 521 Belmont St., Smithfield. Light refreshments will follow.

Throughout February, the Heritage Center’s first-floor exhibit hall features displays about Masonic lodges and Eastern Star chapters. The Heritage Center is located at 241 E. Market St., Smithfield. For more information, call 934-2836 or email heritagecenter@johnstonnc.com.

Speechcraft

Clayton Area Toastmasters will present Speechcraft from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 15, 22 and 29 and April 12 at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton. Learn public speaking through practice and by studying the materials provided. Each student will have an adviser who will help the student prepare for speeches and evaluations. 22NeedleIn

22NeedleIn, a new group for grown-ups and children, will hold its first meeting from 9:22 a.m. to 5:22 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in the children’s department at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. The group will meet the last Wednesday of every month. Bring any knitting, crochet, quilting or other needlework projects to work on. Musicians on a Mission

A benefit for the Smithfield Rescue Mission is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Cleveland Draft House, 6101 N.C. 42 West in the Cleveland community. The event will feature live music, a silent auction and face painting and balloons by Mimi the Clown. The Smithfield Rescue Mission houses and rehabilitates homeless men, women and children. The board of directors of Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the conference room at 1102 E. Massey St. in Smithfield.

Cooper Alumni

A Black History Month celebration is scheduled for noon Saturday, Feb. 25, at the American Legion building in Clayton. The Cooper Heritage Alumni and Friends Association will honor the 1963 state championship basketball team from William Mason Cooper High School. Luncheon tickets are $20. Black history at JCC

Throughout February, “A Reflection of Negro History Through the Eye of a Lens” is on display from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Frank Creech Art Gallery. The photos from the private collection of Craig James include daguerreotypes, ambertypes and tintypes from the 19th century.

On Feb. 15, students can take part in a Black History Quiz Bowl from noon until 2 p.m. in Room 160 of the Elsee Building.

A Black Business Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the lobby of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. The annual Gospel Fest is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. This year’s program will feature traditional and modern gospel music.

Soup, sandwiches

A soup and sandwich lunch is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Masonic lodge on South Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. The cost is $6, with proceeds going to scholarships.

Cookies on sale

Girl Scout cookies have gone on sale at booths across Johnston County. To find the one nearest you, go to nccoastalpines.org and click on the thin mint in the lower left corner. Booth sales will continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 12.

Day trip for kids, grandparents

The Selma Parks and Recreation Department invites children and their grandparents to travel to Raleigh on Friday, March 30. Stops include the Marbles Museum and the N.C. Museum of Life and Science. Bring a bag lunch; drinks will be provided.

Senior citizen bingo

Cornhole tournament

A cornhole tournament is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Princeton High School gym. Proceeds will go to Cub Scout Pack 23. The cost is $40 and includes two event T-shirts and entry into the winner-take-all, double-elimination tournament. Hot dogs and other concessions will be available. AARP tax help

The AARP is preparing tax returns for older adults and low-income taxpayers. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, tax preparers are at the Community and Senior Services office, 1363 W. Flapjack fundraiser
