Clayton -- A coffeehouse and eatery here may close their doors.

In an e-mail blast to customers last week, Jodi Sager and Cliff Morgan announced last week they may close The FlipSide and The Coffee Mill. “We never anticipated having to compose a message such as this, and to be honest, we’re not sure how to even communicate what is happening,” the owners stated.

The e-mail did not say when the coffee shop and restaurant would close, but town officials think Sager and Morgan want to stay open through the end of the year.

“And while we’ve not set an actual date for closing yet, we wanted to give everyone a heads up, so it isn’t a total shock,” Sager and Morgan stated. “We’ll let everyone know as soon as we’ve worked something out with our landlord.”

The weak economy played a large role in the heartbreaking decision, Sager and Morgan stated. While consumers are spending less, the coffee shop and restaurant are paying more for food, alcohol, utilities and rent, the owners said.

Sager and Morgan stated they tried to “keep our costs down and trim our labor costs as most as possible, but it is just not enough.”

The Coffee Mill opened eight years ago; the FlipSide followed. Both played host to live music and art exhibits.

“It’s been a wonderful ride,” Sager and Morgan stated. “We didn’t do this to get rich, by any means at all. But it is illogical to attempt to continue as it becomes more difficult to pay our bills.”
