SMITHFIELD — The county’s first year-round schools will welcome students on July 29, about a month before other schools.
But otherwise, parents at West Smithfield and South Smithfield elementary schools will see few differences between the year-round and traditional calendars, said schools spokeswoman Terri Sessoms.
“They share the same holidays,” she said, explaining that the schools wanted to be mindful of families with children in both year-round and traditional schools.
After starting July 29, the school year at West Smithfield and South Smithfield will end next June 10. Throughout the year, the schools will have several so-called “intersession days,” or days set aside for remediation and enrichment.
Children who want neither can stay home, but the schools will encourage kids to take advantage of the opportunity, Sessoms said. “The most important thing is students who need that extra help can receive it during that time without slowing the rest of the class down,” she said.
Here’s the year-round calendar:
• First day of school: July 29
• Last day of school: June 10
• Intersession days: Oct. 5-9; Jan. 4-8; March 29-31; and April 1.
• Teacher workdays: Sept. 25, Oct. 2, Dec. 21, Jan. 11, Feb. 26 and March 26.
• Other student holidays: Sept. 7; Oct. 12-16; Nov. 11, 25-27; Dec. 22-Jan. 1; Jan. 18; April 2, 5-9; and May 31.
• Snow makeup days: Feb. 26; April 7, 8; and June 11.
