South High reunion

The South Johnston High School Alumni Association will hold a reunion and basketball game Sept. 5. The reunion is for all graduates and current students. The basketball game will be at noon in the old Benson Elementary School gym. Admission is $3 for ages 13 and older. Concessions will be available. Pork, chicken dinner

Plates of barbecued pork and chicken will be on sale from 5:30 till 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at West Johnston High School, 5935 Raleigh Road near Coats Crossroads. The cost is $7 a plate and includes pork and, or chicken, potatoes and green beans. The West Johnston-South Johnston football game will follow. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the West High Band.

Clayton reunion

The Clayton High School class of 1984 will hold its 25-year reunion Saturday, Nov. 14, at Pine Hollow Golf Course. If you are a member of the class or know someone who is, call Ramona Brady Robertson at 359-2777.

Open house

Johnston Community College will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an open house from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, on the main campus in Smithfield. Come take a tour of the campus and learn more about JCC's academic and continuing-education programs. Also, the day will offer interactive displays, games and activities for children.. Ag in the Classroom

Four Johnston County teachers received training this summer in “Ag in the Classroom,” which incorporates agriculture into lessons in reading and science. They were Laura Costa of Dixon Road Elementary School, Sarah Nehmer of Benson Elementary, Cindy Thornton of Selma Elementary and Darlene Williford of Glendale-Kenly Elementary.

The training included lesson demonstrations, hands-on learning activities and a full day of farm tours. Also, the teachers visited the N.C. State University Field Laboratories at Lake Wheeler and the State Farmers Market.

Scholarship winner

Ashlyn Nicole Blythe, formerly of Selma, has received a $42,000 scholarship to attend DePaul University in Chicago. She plans to study computing and digital media.

Blythe is the daughter of Timothy and Mary Lou Blythe of Aurora, Ill. She is the granddaughter of Ted and Sue Edmonds of Selma.
