Financial aid

A program on financial aid is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at South Johnston High School, 10381 U.S. 301 South, Four Oaks. Maria Lynch of Johnston Community College will talk about college-admission requirements and financial aid, including scholarships.

The meeting is for parents of South Johnston juniors and seniors.

Barbecued chicken

Plates of barbecued chicken will be on sale from 10:30 a.m. till 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Sandhu's Cleveland Emporium, 9005 Cleveland Road in the Cleveland community. Plates are $7 and include half a chicken, green beans, boiled potatoes, bread and dessert.

Proceeds will go to the West Johnston High School cross country team, which plans to compete at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. For details, e-mail bwatson@acroprint.com.

Powhatan Elementary

The Parent Teacher Association at Powhatan Elementary School will hold its second annual 5K RACE and Health & Safety Expo on Saturday, Oct. 10. (RACE is short for Run to Accelerate our Children's Education.) The event will feature a 5-kilometer race, a 5K walk, a one-mile fun run for children 12 and younger and a kids' dash for children 5 and younger. The races will begin at 8:30 a.m. For more information, or to register, visit powhatanpta.org or fsseries.com. From 8 a.m. till noon, the Health and Safety Expo will feature flu shots, food sampling from local restaurants, checks of car safety seats, face painting and blood-pressure checks. The flu shots, available to adults, will be $24.99.

The PTA will serve a spaghetti supper from 5:30 till 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in the school cafeteria. The cost is $5 per plate. For tickets, contact Laura Kell at 333-9614 or at kell5@nc.rr.com.

SSS class of 1974

The Smithfield-Selma High School class of 1974 will hold its 35-year reunion at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Country Club of Johnston County. The cost is $25.
