Benson — Joyce Wood and her fitness buddies were walking around the Johnston Medical Mall on Valentine’s Day. As Wood approached the Cyber Café, the Johnston County Chorale surprised her with a medley of love songs.

“As I was walking around, near the entrance at the front door, I saw them and said, ‘Hey, are you guys are going to sing for somebody today?’ ” Wood said. “One lady said, ‘Yes, you just keep walking.’ When she said that, it was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ ”

Dressed in tuxedos and shades of red, the men and women belted out “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Love” for Wood. Standing nearby, among the spectators, were Lori and Jonathan Langdon, Wood’s daughter and grandson. The singers received a round of applause before they dashed off to their next location.

Langdon hired the chorale to sing her mother songs they listened to together. “My mom heard the chorale surprise someone last year, so that was a great hint to me,” Langdon said. “I was like, yes, I can do that. They did a great job, and it makes people feel good to have someone sing to you.”

Two hours later, the chorale went to Johnson Orthopedic Center to surprise Vicky Bylciw, a registered nurse. Tears sprung to her eyes as the singers announced that Bylciw’s husband of 12 years, Bob, had set up the Valentine treat.

“It was a nice surprise,” Bylciw said. “It was really sweet.”

The chorale has been delivering singing valentines as a fund-raiser for the past five years. Nearly 20 people received valentine songs on Tuesday.

Some recipients are a bit embarrassed by the attention, but others embrace the moment, chorale members said.

“We had one lady dance for us at one of the nursing homes last year,” said Connie Johnson, a member of the chorale for 25 years. “She heard us singing and came dancing out of her room. She was dressed up for Valentine’s Day and had a real good time.”

Fred Toole took part in the event for the second consec-utive year. “It’s just a good-feeling kind of day,” he said. “When you give love, you get back love. It is just good to feel it come back to you.”
