SELMA — Starting this Saturday, residents here will have more access to local produce. The Selma Development Partnership, a nonprofit group, plans aims to host the Selma Farmers Market year-round on Saturdays. The market will open at 9 a.m. March 28 at the west end of Anderson Street beside Cotton Mill Flea Market. Vendors may register on the day of the market. Spaces will cost $5 each.Roger Root, chairman of Selma Development Partnership, is not quite sure what produce and goods will be available at the first farmer’s market. The partnership sent surveys to 500 households in and around Selma. It also surveyed people who sell at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh.About 100 people, including 16 farmers, returned the survey, which showed interest in a farmers’ market.“This is a win-win situation because the consumers need a break with fresh produce and the farmers need a break by selling it to the locals,” Root said. The Selma Development Partnership sponsors the town’s Welcome Center, Historical Homes Association and the East Coast Antique Show. “Our primary objective is to make things better for Selma, the people of Selma and its businesses,” Root said. The farmers’ market is looking for a manager. To learn more about the job or market, call Root at 965-3901.— Sarah McNeil
