Clayton — A stolen truck was found Thursday morning near the intersection of Interstate 40 and N.C. 210, Clayton police reported. But its trailer, which contained $150,000 worth of liquor, is still missing.

A resident on Thursday morning called authorities about a transfer truck that had been parked near a business entrance for several days, Clayton police reported. A Johnston County Sheriff's deputy identified the vehicle to be the one that was reported stolen. The trailer and its contents were not found.

Originally, it was reported that the trailer contained liquor valued at $500,000, but a follow-up investigation revealed that the value was $150,000, according to a Clayton Police Department news release.

The tractor-trailer truck was stolen from a Clayton lot some time between Thursday night and Friday, police reported Tuesday. The Cowan Systems rig’s estimated value is $100,000.

The vehicle was stolen from a lot near U.S. 70 Business. The liquor was destined for Raleigh from an out-of-state location, according to the Clayton Police Department. The driver, a local man, reported that he parked the truck in the lot behind Bojangle’s Restaurant off of Shotwell Road Thursday evening and returned Friday to find it missing.

The trailer is a 2005 Standard and has a Maine tag.

Anyone with information on the theft or the whereabouts of the trailer or its content is asked to contact Detective Jason Barnes at 553-1570 or by e-mail at jbarnes@townofclaytonnc.org.
