Smithfield — The new Smithfield Recreation & Aquatics Center needs your help.

A contest began today [Wednesday] to find the tagline that best defines the center, scheduled to open in January. The center will have a handful of amenities, including an eight-lane competition swimming pool, a children's pool, racquetball courts, two gyms, fitness rooms and a walking track.

Center Director Dale Ham said the tagline should leave a lasting impression. "Your tagline is like your brand," he said. "That is what you are known for. When you think of fun, family, quality of life, health and fitness, you just kind of start throwing words together, and it will really take on what the facility is about."

The center's supporters also hope the contest will attract more people to become members. Memberships will be available starting in September, said Tim Johnson, director of the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department. Individual memberships for Smithfield residents will be $35 per month, while a family of four will pay $60 per month. Non-residents would pay an additional $10 to $15 per month.

People are already stopping Johnson at the grocery store to ask when they can become members. "People see us and ask, 'When will you start selling memberships? I don't want to be left out,'" he said. "I promise, I got one for you. We will not sell out. I think people are starting to get interested."

Tagline submissions without a name and telephone number will not be eligible for prizes. Contestants can enter as many taglines as they wish, but the Smithfield Recreation Advisory Committee will choose only one winner.

Besides a six-month free membership, the winner's tagline will appear on promotional materials and letterheads.

"I know I'd like to say I made the tagline," Ham said.

Entries must be submitted by noon on Aug. 15 through e-mail at daleham-parks@ncrrbiz.com, or they can be sent to SRAC Tagline Contest, P.O. Box 2344, Smithfield, N.C. 27577. Submissions can also be dropped off at the Parks and Recreation office at 1500 Buffalo Road in Smithfield.
