Smithfield — Smithfield police are investigating an armed robbery and shooting at a convenience store Tuesday morning.

At 11:40 a.m., father and son Laljibhai Parshottamhai Patel, 53, and Chirag Laljibhai Patel, 26, both of 600 Wedgewood Ave., Zebulon, were working in their store, 3 G Mart at 320 Stancil St. when an armed gunman entered the store, demanded money, and then fled.

According to Lt. Keith Powell, the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the store. Laljibhai Patel went after him, and the suspect turned and shot him.

Laljibhai Patel was in good condition Wednesday afternoon at WakeMed in Raleigh.

“He was talking and alert when he left,” Powell said.

Chirag Patel heard the shot and called 9-1-1.

After firing the shot, the suspect got into a gold Toyota Camry that was driven by another man. Powell said the suspect was completely covered, wearing dark clothes, a mask and gloves.
