CLAYTON -- A 4-year-old boy who found his way into a fountain pool in Riverwood Athletic subdivision Sunday morning died later that day at WakeMed in Raleigh.

Police said Derek Casanova-Gonzales wandered from his parents as they cleaned the nearby Riverwood Child Development Center. The parents, Gil Alonso and Erika Gonzalez-Trejo, reportedly searched the inside of the building before finding their son unresponsive in the outdoor fountain just before 9 a.m.

Chief Glen Allen said in a news release that Alonso began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his son before rescue workers arrived. Casanova-Gonzalez was reportedly autistic, Allen said.
