Help with winter heating bills

To help with heating bills, the Johnston County Department of Social Services will make a one-time payment in February 2010 to eligible households.

Social Services will accept applications Nov. 2-13 in Building No. 2 on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. Office hours will be 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 2; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 3-6; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 9; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10-13.

Social Services will be closed Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

Unless otherwise notified, households receiving food and nutrition aid will automatically receive a check in February. For more information, call Social Services at 989-5498.

Saluting excellence

The Johnston County Citizens Association will hold its annual Tribute to Excellence banquet at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Johnston Central Alumni Center, 1002 Massey St., Smithfield. District Court Judge Addie Rawls will speak.

The association will honor Sharon Castleberry, Lawrence Davis, Daisy Robertson and Matthew Revell.

The cost is $20 per person.

Tax hearings

The Johnston County Board of Equalization and Review will meet Thursday, Nov. 5, to hear appeals of property valuations.

The hearings will begin at noon in Conference Room 1 in the Land Use Center, 309 E. Market St., Smithfield. To request a hearing, call Pat Goddard at 919-989-5130.

Meeting notice

The Marketing Commmittee of the Johnston County Tourism Authority will meet at noon today (Wednesday, Aug. 28) at the Visitors Bureau Office, 1535-A Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield.
