Smithfield — A Benson woman is in Johnston County Jail after leading authorities on a car chase early Thursday, authorities reported.

Johnston County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a suspicious fire at 12:56 a.m. at Nancy Ellen Chambers’ house at 121 Patterdale Place. While deputies were on their way, they learned there were several warrants for Chambers’ arrest.

But when deputies got to the house, Chambers, 44, took off in a truck. Deputies chased her into Wake County, where she was arrested.

Chambers was taken to Johnston County Jail and placed under a $20,000 secured bond, said Lt. Chris Strickland of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Her first court appearance was scheduled for Thursday morning, Strickland said.

Chambers had warrants out for her arrest for assault on a child, second-degree trespassing and communicating threats, Strickland said. Now she is also charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding and failure to stop for a stop sign.

No one was hurt in the fire, which is under investigation.
