A 4-year-old Mount Olive girl remains hospitalized after being pulled Sunday afternoon from Tucker Lake, a privately owned lake near Benson.

Tammy Amaon, spokeswoman for the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, said the unidentified girl had been at the lake with her mother and sister. Amaon said the mother told officers she turned her back to retrieve something from a picnic table, and when she turned around, a man was running toward the shore carrying her daughter.

According to a report, the man had felt something touch his leg while in the water and soon realized it was a person. Amaon said the man exited the water and began yelling for help.

Two nurses also at the lake rushed over and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Amaon said. The child was in cardiac arrest but was revived and flown by helicopter to Duke Hospital. Amaon said the girl remains in serious but stable condition.
